Third-Party Ads Guide

A third-party web ad is a snippet of JavaScript code generated from a third-party ad server (such as Flashtalking or Sizmek) in the form of an ad tag, also known as a third-party ad tag. The ad tag is a digital container that allows ads to be displayed.

We collect the ad tag from you and display the ads you've created from a third party. Any ad change made on the third-party ad server will reflect on the single ad tag, so there's no need to update individual ads in your campaigns.

When Third-Party Ads are a good fit

Third-party ads work best when you:

  • Manage all your creative centrally through an external ad server (DCM, Flashtalking, Sizmek, etc.) and want to keep that single source of truth.
  • Need to make frequent creative updates and want them to propagate without re-uploading assets.
  • Are running web display campaigns specifically.
  • Only want to run third-party ads run on web display inventory only. They cannot be used on Native, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or CTV inventory. If your campaign needs those channels, you'll need to upload native creative for those placements.

Click URL Macro

An Ad Click URL Macro is necessary if the system doesn't automatically detect one in the tag:

  • [adrclickurl]
  • [adrclickurl_unesc]

It's crucial to obtain instructions from the third-party tag provider regarding the placement of these click macros. The instructions should also specify whether the URL needs to be encoded or decoded. Failure to add or add them incorrectly may lead to our system being unable to track clicks. Provide the Customer Support team or your Account Manager with these instructions, and we will upload the Ads accordingly.

Upload

The ability to upload Third-Party Ads to the AdRoll ABM platform is not available directly in your account. Reach out to your Customer Success Manager if you want to use Third-party ad tags.

Troubleshooting

There are a few items to consider if you are experiencing issues with your Third-Party Ads:

  • Make sure that your logo is on the creative image.
  • The landing page must include a link to the homepage and/or site privacy policy.
  • The destination URL should not redirect to a different website or redirect to a video, for example, a video on a site like Dailymotion.
  • GIF Ads cannot loop endlessly or be longer than 30 seconds
  • Review our Advertising Policies Guidelines to learn how you can make sure your ads and site are compliant.
