What does it mean to warm up your email address and email domain?
Warming up your email address and email domain means that you have sent and received emails over a period of time and have built up their reputation and credibility. Warming up your your email address and email domain is extremely important to outbound sales emails. It will improve the likelihood of your emails going to your contacts' inboxes instead of getting flagged as spam.
A new domain will start off as neutral and the reputation, good or bad, will be determined over time. Email providers such as Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook etc. have created their own algorithms to determine which emails should be flagged as spam / junk vs. pushed to a recipients inbox.
What might happen if you send emails from an email address or email domain that has not been warmed up?
If you do not warm up your email address and email domain and attempt to send out a large chunk of cold outbound sales emails, the likelihood of your email hitting your contacts spam folder is high.
The more emails that
- Hit your contact's spam folders
- Get reported as spam
- Get deleted without being opened
Will decrease your email reputation and credibility which can sometimes take months to rebuild.
Warming up your email domain and IP address
Your domain and email address are not the only things that need to be warmed up! The pairing of your domain and an IP address also takes time to build credibility. When you send emails through RollWorks we connect your domain to our IP addresses' to help protect your domain against possible spam reports.
Our IP addresses' have been warmed up but the pair (the domain and the IP address) need to build up their reputation over time.
How much time does it take to build up a good reputation?
Unfortunately, there is not a set time frame that is going to work for every domain. Give yourself at least a few weeks.
Recommendations on how to warm up your email address and email domain
- Send small batches (under 20 emails) at one time for at least 4-6 weeks
- Create a list of valid email addresses that you can have a back and forth conversation with i.e. business partners, colleagues, family, warm contacts etc.
